John Deering & John Newcombe
Artist John Deering began his career with a major in Fine Art at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock, as well as studying with portrait artist Truman Alston. He became a cartoonist for the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette in 1981, and was promoted to chief editorial cartoonist seven years later. Since then, he has won awards including the John Fischetti Cartooning Award and the Berryman Award from the National Press Foundation. Collaborator John Newcombe began as a film writer and director, and branched out into cartoon writing with a stint at Archie Comics. Deering and Goodman’s “Zack Hill” is now being adapted into both a television cartoon series and a musical.
